Quartzite vs. quartz: how to choose for a kitchen that gets used
Every week someone walks into the showroom asking for quartzite and pointing at a quartz sample, or the other way round. The confusion is fair: the names are almost identical and both surfaces can look like marble. But one is a rock from a quarry and the other is a factory product, and that difference decides how each one lives in your kitchen.
What each one actually is
Quartzite is a natural stone. It starts as sandstone and, under heat and pressure over millions of years, recrystallises into a very hard rock. It is quarried in blocks, sawn into slabs and polished. Each slab is unique, and colour and veining run through the full thickness.
Engineered quartz is manufactured. Roughly 90 percent ground natural quartz is mixed with polymer resin and pigment, pressed under vacuum and cured into slabs. Colour and pattern are designed, so slab number one matches slab number forty.
Heat, scratches and the daily abuse test
Quartzite takes a hot pan straight from the stove without complaint. It is harder than granite and shrugs off knives and dropped pots. Engineered quartz is also very hard, but the resin binder is the weak link: sustained heat from a pan can discolour it, so a trivet is part of the deal.
In practice, both surfaces survive family life. The difference is which mistakes they forgive. Quartzite forgives heat; quartz forgives spills.
Stains, sealing and what it takes to maintain
Natural stone is porous to some degree. Quartzite is one of the least porous natural stones, but it still needs a penetrating sealer, applied at installation and renewed about once a year. Sealed, it wipes clean. Unsealed, red wine and oil can leave a mark.
Engineered quartz is non-porous. There is nothing to seal, ever. Warm water and a mild cleaner is the entire maintenance plan, which is why it has become the default for busy households.

Look, depth and how it ages
This is where quartzite wins on its own terms. The depth of a polished natural stone, the way light gets into the crystal, the movement across a three-metre island: engineered products imitate it well but do not quite match it. Quartzite also ages gracefully; a polished surface can be re-honed decades later.
Quartz offers something different: certainty. The sample in your hand is exactly what arrives. For a long run of counters that must match, or a client who wants a solid white, that certainty is worth a lot.

When clients are stuck, we ask three questions. The answers usually make the decision for them.
- Do you cook with heavy pans on a gas range and want to put them down anywhere? Quartzite.
- Do you want zero maintenance and a surface that will never need sealing? Quartz.
- Do you want the counter to be the feature of the room, unique to your house? Quartzite. Do you want it to be the quiet backdrop? Quartz.
